What means the short form of IRHD?

IRHD is the short form of "International Rubber Hardness Degree".

IRHD is a measuring device to measure the hardness of rubber and plastics.

What means hardness?

Hardness is the resistance against the indentation of a known geometrical indentor with determined force into a sample.

What means IRHD?

IRHD is a material parameter for elastomers, foams and plastics.

Which parts you can measure with IRHD?

The range is from silicones through elastomers to plastics. Important is the material thickness and material width.

IRHD systems has dead weights (no spring!). The weights produce the required forces. Each indentation way has a corresponding hardness.

What should you consider regarding the measuring time?

The measuring time of 30 s is determined in the ISO 48 standard.

How often should you re-calibrate an IRHD System?

The calibration of a IRHD system is described in the standard ISO 18898. The minimum requirements of the measuring instruments are described in the ISO 18898. At a calibration the geometry of the indentor and pressure foot, spring forces and depth of indentation will be checked.
We recommend an annual calibration.

How can I avoid errors while measuring?

  • While measuring it is forbidden to move the sample. Otherwise you can damage the indentor.
  • Before measuring you have to check whether the IRHD type is suitable to measure the material.
  • The ambient temperature, the sample temperature and the temperature of the IRHD system should be 23 °C.
  • Don`t use thinner materials than described in the standard.
  • The surface of the sample must be clean and flat. The sample must have two parallel surfaces.
  • When you measure O-Rings please use the O-Ring Center Device. Cord diameters from 0,6 bis 8,0 mm can be positioned exactly at the highest point of the O-Ring.
  • If you make more than one measurement per sample you can use the measuring position only one time. That means after each measurement you have to move the sample.
  • If the IRHD system is used improper you have to check it or send it back for calibration.

Please ship the IRHD system only in the original packaging. You can order the packaging at Hildebrand. The transport lock must be activated.
